Wildlife
abounds on Chebeague. Osprey, blue heron, egrets, red-tailed hawks, loons,
bald eagles, and a wide variety of colorful smaller birds are residents of
the island. An occasional wimbrel, snow goose, pheasant, and willow
ptarmigan visit from time to time, too. |

In addition to
fox, raccoons, and rabbits, the island has a healthy deer population. Moose,
although uncommon here, occasionally swim across from the mainland. This one, in the
insert, splashes through the skating pond during the fall rutting season. |

The annual
migrations of Canadian Geese, Monarchs, plovers, and more are sights to
behold in both spring and fall. No visit to Chebeague is complete, of
course, without taking advantage of the ocean. Seals, terns of every kind,
crustaceans including lobsters and crabs combine with bass, mackerel,
bluefish, and more to round out inshore viewing. Porpoise, whales,
sharks, and sunfish are common sightings offshore. If you're lucky, the elusive bluefin tuna just may grace you with a glimpse of its yellow buttons!
